The Cyprus Statistical Society (CSS) gives great importance to the quality and independence of official statistics. It, therefore, shares the concerns of other Statistical Associations (e.g. International Statistical Institute (ISI), European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC), International Association for Official Statistics, American Statistical Association (ASA) etc.) regarding the legal proceedings against the former President of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT),Mr. Andreas Georgiou. Although justice has prevailed in the case of the alleged falsification of deficit and debt figures, Mr. Georgiou is still facing legal harassment. The UN Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and the European Statistics Code of Practice give statistical offices the right to defend their statistics and comment in a transparent way on their misuse. Therefore, this case is considered fundamental to official statistics production, scientific freedom, scientific responsibility and democratic and human rights, which CSS values in its constitution and actions.
